Ameublement Elvis opened its doors on February 18 1975, when appliance Elvis decided to sell his Corvette for $22,000 to open his store. Even if the amount of money was substantial for the time, it wasn't much for Elvis to build an inventory of used furniture and home appliances that would make his reputation.
The name Ameublement Elvis is by no means a fluke. The passion of the owner for Elvis and his numerous pilgrimages to Graceland certainly influenced his decision, but there was also a practical side to the choice. He wanted a name that people would remember. The owner admits that Ameublement Daniel would not have had the same impact. On August 16 1977, the day Elvis died, Daniel got the confirmation that Ameublement Elvis had been the right choice. Reporters from every media in Montreal went to his store to get his reaction to the King's death. In the following days, his store was full.
In his modest beginnings, Ameublement Elvis used a Volkswagen Beetle to deliver stoves and refrigerators. Elvis traveled the streets of Montreal with appliances on the roof and rear bumper of the Beetle. He would finally sell his Beetle to two students to whom he'd just delivered appliances. Elvis went back to his store riding the bus.
Elvis' début in Cuba
If many believe that Elvis lives on an island with Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, they're wrong....partially. In the early 1990's, Furniture Elvis is seen on the island of Cuba engaged in an economic mission to sell second hand appliances to the government of Fidel. El Jefe Maximo likes Elvis' appliances so much that he orders the import of two full containers of used appliances per month...until the Russians adopted capitalism and stopped helping Cuba.
Elvis signs a new deal
In 2009, Ameublement Elvis adds to his existing inventory a complete line of appliances with slight imperfections. It will now be possible to have appliances fit for a "King" without a royal price tag.
